News

09.07.08: Take a look in the Dumbarton section of " Aviation Sites on the Clyde". Blackburns Dumbarton aircraft factory had two streets in Dumbarton named after them.

I photographed them recently. Books, just finished reading the 2nd Edition of " Air Road to the Isles", see books section it is one of many interesting books about flying and aircraft by kea publishing.

14th of this month, next Monday to be precise, will be our 4th Meeting of the Inverclyde Flying Boat Project , the project is making slow but sure progress and offers of help or training are still needed. You will be most welcome, however near or far you may be from Greenock. Pembroke Dock in Wales are still busy finding ways of lifting a Sunderland off the Harbour bottom, this was a Mk1 and is intact though suffering from wear and tear after being submerged for 60 years or so.

We have been invited to demonstrate the plan we have for using a flight simulator for the Empire Class flying boat flight deck on our full scale model. This will be fun!

Needs:- 1 Marconi Morse key used in the Radio Room of our Flying Boat.

Can anyone out there help us?

25.06.08: Four more postcards for you, this time at Prestwick Scotland, anyone know the manufacturers of each of these?

Inverclyde Flying Boat Project latest, 20 frame brackets for first unit have been made by a Govan Charity just to get us going! Thankyou lads and lassies for your valued help. Govan indeed qualifies to work on our project because they are on the Clyde and are experienced in meeting peoples needs. Can't thank you enough, I hope this spurs others on to help likewise. Currently working on CAD Accommodation details for this unit. We have some young people already showing interest in our flying boat, thanks for your enquiries Tony from Greenock. Some local lads are showing a need to learn skills with woodwork, we are endeavouring to get large organisations like Clydeport, Devol Engineering, The Council and others, to believe that we are serious about our venture. One large timber company have already responded and supplied us with materials. Thankyou.

Next meeting of the Flying Boat Project is Monday 14th July next at Barnards Court Greenock, see earlier news for ways of getting there. Time 7.30pm. Please use the "Contact Us" page for ways you might help

Once again let me thank those who have alread met us and shown their encouragement for what will be a long term challenge, but well worth it.

19.05.08:- A larger picture of Golden Fleece, the Empire Class G that was maintained and serviced at Scottish Aviation Greenock during the war. This is her in the Civilian paint scheme she had post war. See images section.

Work the team is researching just now is for moulds for the propellers, hub and engine cylinders for the production of glass fibre replicas for the Flying Boat Project.

We have a number of aviation museums working with us on this requirement.

Our next meeting which will be announced soon will include a demonstration of the type of Flight Simulator that the public will be able to get their hands on, once the flying boat is completed. This will be a few years away, so come along and see what the future has to offer. Thanks to all who attended the meeting last thur evening, we made some significant progress with the election of Committee members.

15.05.08:- Four more cards see 'Images' and scroll down. VC10 or Tristar what is the three engined jet called?

Meeting tonight Barnards Court Greenock 7.30pm, all welcome. For details of how to get here scroll down and see news with address postcode etc for AA or RAC maps etc.

We are pressing on, this project is more a marathon than a sprint and will be made step by step, there are many Museums and Companies who know what we are planning, material and finances have been given or promised. Some seeds are growing others have fallen by the wayside. All of those helping us will be announced at our meetings as we proceed. Major funding groups are being approached. Come along if you can and be a member helping to appoint leaders in our new committee.

More wood has been offered by another large local supplier. We need help with funds to lease a site we have found locally, with heating and lighting and space to carry out the manufacture of parts. Arnold Clark has been approached to support us in this work with young people of Inverclyde, amongst other large industrial and engineering companies.

16.04.08:- Postcards, scroll to bottom of 'Images' section and see first instalment of a collection of pictures a young ATC cadet collected in the 60's. if you can identify them have a go, send your comments to admin via the " contact Us " section. There are plenty more

to come.

14.04.08:- Latest important news for FBP, the timber for the commencement of the first unit has been delivered into our store recently. That is five 8'x 4' x 1" thk plywood sheets, which will be used for the keel, brackets, beam knees and frames.

This is the first company to respond to our request for material support. Thankyou Fraser.

A meeting is taking place tomorrow to apply for two other grant programmes to help us move forward.

Post Cards with aircraft will be placed in 'Images' by the weekend.

09.04.08:-  Next Meeting of Flying Boat Project will be at Greenocks Barnards Court at 7.30pm on Thur May 15th next. For details of how to get there see PA15 2TA in RAC or AA or other road maps on the interenet.( 40 East Hamilton Street.)

This meeting will be principally to form a group who will see the project move into action mode. Those who could not attend the first meeting, for any reason, are now invited once more to try and make this one, you are all very welcome.

Images of a Greenock boys collection of Aircraft picture post cards will be presented soon.

30.03.08:- Well our first meeting of the Flying Boat Project went off as planned, fifteen interested people attended, and after viewing the Aviation on the Clyde and Flying Boat Project presentations, a number of very interesting questions were submitted.

Two particularly useful suggestions were that 1, we should seek recognition of FBP to be a registered charity and 2. That a number of visitors are going to look into the prospects of a Company being formed to create apprenticeships for youngsters leaving school.

Professional advice of the latter is that it is premature to form a Company at this stage, though this doesnt mean that it cant be applied in the future.

Many people weren't able to attend because of other commitments, but are making steps to be there at our next gathering. Watch this space.

See latest S23 image and new publisher link.

11.03.08:- Creating Gallery of Short Brothers S23 and S26 flying boat pics for you all shortly, these were the Class C and Class G respectively, that means the boats names began with the letter C and letter G ie. Canopus and Golden or if you like, Caledonia, Clyde and Cameronian etc, and Golden Hind and Golden horn etc.

We have had a national newspaper running our Flying Boat Project, so hopefully more contacts will come foward, indeed only yesterday, same day as publication, a local man has shown interest. We need many more from which to choose our candidates who will make this project happen. I have some pics of Sunderlands in the factory and on the slipways, should you wish to contact me. The local press will be announcing a forthcoming  meeting in Greenock of the first gathering of those interested in this challenging effort. See 16.02.08. News below for details of how to get to us.

01.03.08:- You may have wondered where I had got too, well I have been busy returning history files back to Greenock ATC and reminding local companies of the interest they showed last year in our FBP (Flying Boat Project). I would particularly like to thank riverside inverclyde for their time and direction, particularly to others who have associated projects planned. I will be concentrating on media use this month to advertise our upcoming meeting here in Greenock, see below, both in the local and national press.

Much is happening in the Aviation front and of course our Naval work. We in this neck of the woods are hoping for more consistent and flowing work, if I may use the word, from our work providers.

We here will endeavour to employ skilled, experienced men and women to pass on their knowledge to any young people showing interest. If you have a talent don't bury it, use it and see how many more you will find on the way. If you think you can help in anyway with our "fullscale" replica of a luxury flying boat, then contact us. Boat will be mainly wood with wood/metal cladding (shell). We need financial support as well as materials.

16.02.08:-

I plan to visit Greenock ATC soon to return Historic files etc they kindly loaned to write up their history on my website from 1995 back to 1945 when the cadets started, however they have since developed their own site see' links 'so its seems right to let them carry on now and add the final stage from '7l back to their roots. They are a great team of people dedicated to training our young people for entrance to the RAF, and I take this moment to thank them for their help in our Battery Park event back in 2005.

Now onto the Flying Boat Project. The  address for our FBP inaugural meeting is Barnards Court Mission 40 East Hamilton Street.Greenock.PA15 2TA. If you put that address or even the post code into any of the map providers on the interenet or RAC AA etc you will be provide with a route to the place. Time is 7-30pm Thur 27th March next. A presentation of the FBP will be given and refreshments are free.We welcome all who might be interested in this project. Look back in my news for details or use the "contact us" section with any questions you may have. Progress is being made and I can assure you of a warm welcome.

07.02.08:-

Doesn't time fly, well ATC latest will shortly be added to their History in our Greenock section, we are coming to the end of 1971, just a couple more dates to add.

The Largs section shows the instrument found in the vicinity of the slipway back in 2005, by a Scotsman who was on holiday from Canada. On his way back to Glasgow Airport for his trip home he dropped in and gave me the item for our 'Museum' !!

A friend of mine who is a bit of an expert on instruments is to try and identify it.It was made in USA and could have come from a Catalina, Coronado and any other number of American built flying boats that spent vsome time at Largs during the war. Will let you know what the few numers and letters on it signify, soon.

While we are looking back in time a contact recently sent me this little story, re a relative of his, who was a crew member with an airline who used the Empire class C flying boats.

"This story was told to me when I was about 10 to 16 years of age.
My late relative John who married my cousin Margret was a Radio operator on the Empire Flying Boat.
He was on a trip to the Tropics, destination not known, and there was some disquiet either with the company or crew I dont know which, and on arrival John decided to leave his employer and return on the next F/Boat back to the U/K, and on his arrival in the U/K John learnt that the Boat he flew out on had disappeared and to my knowledge never found, he counted himself a very lucky man."

Moving back in time, I have now met a number of Major Companies in our area, a College and a Provost, quite understandibly they all needed details, and these have been passed on.

Now I have only touched the tip of the Iceberg as regards the companies that do exist here but I have met those who I felt could significantly support our project. If you need to

know what that is read below.

30.01.08:

BA support in regards their material and history of the company, going back even before the Imperial Airways period of the 30's, has arrived and is excellent, just the thing one would expect from such a distinguished company. If you think thats a compliment it sure is. I have been meeting, and am due to meet significant business people, here on the West Coast of Scotland, and I can say though there has been the odd person, and I say that with no disrespect, who thought it would never ''get off the ground'', and thats right too, it actually took off from the water, we are making headway, and if I'm not mistaken thats a nautical term. It's only whilst I was thinking of the word Aeronautical that I realised that the other word Airliner has something in common, ie in our Case the "Caledonian" and "Clyde" amongst others were indeed, really liners that left the waters and reached for the sky. Round these parts we had every reason to be proud of the QE2

recently, and were sorry to see her go, but the good news is, I know the retired folk who built her and they are just the men and women who can use their skills and guide young folks into a worthwhile skill and mighty dream. Come on rally to the support of this project

and lets go for it.

25.01.08:

The "boat" things are moving apace, BA have promised to send some stuff up from their Heathrow Museum. Just to give you the connection the "Caledonia" flying boat has with them, their parenthood went something like this, Imperial Airways, BOAC and thence British Airways. Caledonia, Clyde and Cameronian were 3 of 28 a/c ordered by Imperial Airways Ltd back in the late 30's.

Meeting has been planned for Thur 27th March next at 7.30pm (19:30hrs for those of you who insist you can fly a plane! or have navigated a boat for that matter).

Venue is Barnards Court Mission Greenock, exact spot will be given nearer the time, suffice to say its the Eastern side of Macdonalds and on the dual carriage way into Greenock. A8

Thats it for now, work on this Project is needing my attention. Thankyou for all who are helping so far, Major Sponsers are needed, why not come along, send a representative and enjoy the Presentation.

16.01.08: Development taking place just now re Flying Boat Project. Business cards have been produced and are given out to those who are supporting our project and to businesses who I am to visit this year. The morse key for a Sunderland has been sent to me and another is expected soon for the Empire Class radio room. Copies of Radio Room Transmitters and Receivers manuals have been kindly offered as a direct result of the feature placed in the Feb edition of Practical Wireless. We would like to hear from anyone who can help in the supply of any equipment that was used in the Empire Flying Boat. Sunderland equipment and Sandringham eqpt that is similar would also be welcome. Please use the 'contact us' section in the header if you are interested in knowing details of our work.

Construction plans for the first unit will commence Mon 28th Jan next.

ATC history being added shortly.

03.01.08: Happy New Year to you all. Well, have you noticed the newcomer to our page images? The aircraft is ML 184 The last Sunderland Flying Boat. If you want to see more of this a/c in action see Patrick Kempe's video/DVD. An appreciation of ML 184 - Islander The Last Sunderland Flying Boat, his web site is in 'Links'. A book for those interested in Empire Class C flying boats has been added to the 'Book' section as well.

ATC 1971 History a short clip is added to 49F squadron history see Greenock section.

A meeting will be announced shortly to be held in Greenock to discuss with those interested, the progress being made for the plan to build the Full scale replica Empire Class C flying boat (Predecessor of the Sunderland), where it will be built and where it will be displayed. Watch this space.

21.12.07: Time now to wish you all a Happy Christmas. Thankyou for your feedback and responses over this year. More of the History of the Greenock ATC in the new year but will be concentrating on other sites as Largs, Helensburgh and Dumbarton and whats happening there.

Will be contacting BA in the new year to, to see what they think of our Flying Boat Project.

Once again thankyou, particularly those who have given items and encouragement toward the Empire Class C build.

11.12.07: See Greenock ATC 49F Squadron in new additions to web links section, also East Kilbride model flying club has a link too. Take a look at them and enjoy.

More ATC History to be added shortly.Promises of items and original IWM poster to our Flying Boat Project. It is planned to commence first unit in new year, we are still looking for local storage space for material already promised and I will be discussing place to build that unit, today.Local businesses have been contacted for sponsership and support and the task will continue in the new year. We are looking for  a Major sponser to head this project. Please make contact with us.

03.12.07: Christmas is coming.....!!   ATC History still being added to.

Not be long before I give my invited presentation at East Kilbride on a, History of Clyde Aviation and b, Flying Boat Project. No need to ask anyone what this meeting will be about, and dont anyone mention tennis!!

I'm looking forward to the opportunity of showing my collection of relevant images and reminders of what this part of Scotland gave us in the past and the contribution it made too our modern aviation world.

Once again any help, material, offer of support for our Empire class C, or, Sunderland full scale building projects, please access me through the 'Contact Us' header.

Let me remind you that our object 1 Is to have an aircraft that the public can 'walk thro' and have a snack, using the 'galley' associated with both these aircraft, and perhaps just as interesting for children as well as adults the chance to virtualy fly the aircraft/flying boats, on the cockpit simulators.

2. The gathering together of 40 young people who under the supervision of skilled craftsmen (8-10 adults) will over a two year time span create a lasting memorial not only to their work but to the men and women who built and those who flew such aircraft for our sake.

20.11.07: ATC History for Greenock now down to 1972, take a look in 'Greenock' under Aviation Sites on the Clyde.

Flying Boat Project moving ahead, already approached local business men and banks, and have had promises subject to getting "go-ahead" next March by one of our materials suppliers. If your company want to know more of this project, and perhaps have me visit with a presentation then contact me on 'header' above.

We hope to start in April next and all offers of help will be seriously discussed and appreciated. If you want to support us in anyway now's the time to do it.

14.11.07: Well the Islay mishaps are detailed in the Crash Site section, take a look, I have copied the write ups just as I received them, I must say I have never had such accounts so fresh from the pens of crewmembers, who indeed are still with us!

I might pop over and meet one of them who is living quite close by.

The other is a fellow Yorkshireman from Settle so he needs to 'watch out' too.

Thankyou gentlemen for your accounts. LRD

Flying Boat Project on back burner, but funding is hopefully on its way. I was with some charming Rolls Royce personnel from Scotland last evening, and they are doing all they can to help us. When I say back burner I'm quoting Port Glasgow regeneration group who will be searching for their own funding at this time of the season. Best of Luck to all Volunteers who are trying to strengthen our Communities despite lack of Government help. If you would like to help our project dont hesitate to contact me on the above header.(Administrator) Clyde Aviation. We are hoping to help 40 young people and 8-10 skilled/ retired adults to work together over two years to complete our fullsize replica of a Flying Boat circa 1936. "Caledonia" or "Clyde" Wing span 114ft x 87ft long x 24ft rudder height.( Above baseline)

Help us to Help Them.

08.11.07: If you think the crash site has not had much material added, Iam to add some sites which are in Scotland, off Islay, Bowmore to be precise, involving Sunderland and an Empire Class C "Clio" which crashed with no loss of life.

I have just received an E-mail from the nephew of the Flight Engineer who lost his life when the Catalina sunk off Cumbrae, he has offered a 'full' detail of his uncles career.

He had seen an account given by our previous researcher recently. I have asked for pics perhaps we will be able to publish them on our site!

Still awaiting news from the meeting by Port Glasgow regeneration organisation, discussing our project to build a full size replica of the " Caledonia" or "Clyde" locally

Lines Plan to be completed by Monday next, will be sent to Brian Cassidy next week, then onto Australia for their building.

02.11.07: Flying boat project to be discussed with two other parties locally, next week, and an interesting meeting had been held this wednesday with Port Glasgow authorities.

Hopefully a place to build, and a place to display will be discussed, apart from the Primary function which is to give much needed work along with associated support to our young people, and I might add, to some of our retired people who have much experience to give.

Back to ATC more of this is being added today.

The books section hopefully will have an extension showing some "Flying Boat" reading added shortly too. A great book concerning the formulation of Prestwick airport, Scottish Aviation and first powered flights in Scotland will be amongst these.

Flying Boat lines plans to be finished a week on Monday and these will be sent to boat builders in Newcastle NSW Australia soon after. They are to build Full scale replica on behalf of Quantas Airlines. I have written to British Airways and had no response yet.

I am waiting for a reply from North East Aviation Museum, Sunderland.

Oban War and Peace Museum have said they will be pleased to help us with the propeller hubs and engine moulds once we are underway. Thankyou Neil and John for your offer of support. Rolls Royce are also waiting in the side lines to help. They have an original engine, namely a Bristol Pegasus X that was fitted to the Class C Flying boats.

I do hope we can work with all the youngsters.

I was at band practice last night and two juniors asked if they could help to paint the boat we intend building. One said his dad was a joiner too.

23.10.07:-ATC back today on course with a 1973 clip see Greenock site.

Flying boat going ahead by approaching industry and people who would like to donate, instruments, particularly aircraft clock which fits in instrument panel in front of pilots. Any

aircraft components that you may have however large or small, would be a help as we know of aviation Museums who will swop us for items we need. A pic of instrument panel and a list of all items required for the Full scale replica can be obtained by using 'contact us' above.

Any questions about the aircraft build please contact me. All donations to this project will help keep our young folk off the streets and could lead to more permanent work.

Thankyou all in anticipation of your help.

All help can be acknowledged on this site if required or letters of receipt. I have approached British Airways, Rolls Royce etc.

I am contacting all I know in the Aviation Societies to help.

I have my 3rd public meeting at East Kilbride in December to tell the locals about our Project and Give them a potted history of Clyde Aviation.

20.10.07:- Latest on Flying Boat project.

Big Lottery Fund are not going to help us with this attempt to employ 40 youth and 10 adult supporters, there reason being that it doesnt fit in the Cattegory of " Investing in the Community".

We have a meeting next week to discuss the heritage aspect of this project with local Regeneration group so I am hoping we will find a) A place to build and b)A place to exhibit and let the public walk thro the air liner and by simulation experience what it was like to fly the "boat".It is anticipated that the public will also be able to buy a snack from the "Active Galley" that all these airliners had.

ATC history will continue next week as usual.

08.10.07:- Chris Pointon sends some information that puts a new light on the Catalina sinking at Cumbrae slip during WWII. Here is his E-mail to Clydeaviation last week.

feedback:
Good Morning
Re your paragraph on Largs and the sunken Catalina:
I was doing some research on the death of Flight Engineer Harold Waldron of the Air Transport Auxiliary and found on official documents that he was presumed missing when Catalina FP321 swung on landing after a training flight and sank at Largs on the 22nd April 1943. His 2 fellow crew members also of the Air Transport Auxiliary based at No 4 Ferry Pilots Pool Prestwick were pilots Captain Ernest Cook and Flight Captain Jose Carreras from Spain who both survived the accident. The body of Flight Engineer Harold Waldron has never been found and he is listed on the Runnymede Memorial.
The aircraft was at the time assigned to the A.T.A and not an RAF Squadron probably for training purposes. The role of the A.T.A was to ferry aircraft of many types to where they were needed. This clears the mystery up and I can assure you of its authenticity and if it was not for Harold Waldron we would still be none the wiser.I hope you will give me due credit on your web site.
Christopher Pointon
RAF Researcher

04.10.07: Latest:-

Greenock, hopefully, to build replica flying boat for Scotland. "Caledonia" and "Clyde" were two of 28 Empire Class flying boats ordered by Imperial Airways back in the 30's, the Caledonia was the first and largest flying boat to cross the atlantic non-stop. Other record achieved from Scotland, this type of flying boat broke the world record for distance by carrying another f/b on its back until the mother a/c ran out of fuel then, that aircraft, continuing to reach her destination at the other side of the world.

The Empires were also the forerunner of the Sunderland, 260 of which were built at Dumbarton by a consortium of English and Scottish Builders namely Blackburn and Dennys. ( See relative 'Aviation Sites on the Clyde)

Those wishing to support this build, which will be undertaken by local youth under professional supervision, please contact us, see above.

Note bodies such as British Airways and Rolls Royce have been contacted as well as local 'builders'.

Pics of these aircraft will appear in images, but look up and see one of them in our header.

25.09.07: ATC History into

1975 now soon be 73 and'72 gradually working back to the foundation in 1945.

Latest on Flying Boat Replica. A suitable engine has been found with which the company producing the plane will copy to meet the demand for four. I am workinng to locate a propeller hub myself and am getting help from Duxford and RAF Museum Hendon as well as many of my SYAS contacts

Complete Lines will be ready for production October next.

Quantas airfield in Australia are the people who will receive all the information and components to make this project a success. Clydeside is helping in a significant way.

Sunderland flying boat that sunk at Pembroke Dock is hoped to be raised in the future.

Just checking to see if this Mk1 was built in Dumbarton.I know later Mks were built on the Clyde. Serial No is T9044 Mk1 for those interested. The pilot of this a/c still visits the Museum at Pembroke.

19.09.07: Latest link added for Airfield UK News a news website for large and small airports in the UK take a 'double click' tour and enjoy yourselves.

Let me know what you think and dont be afraid to send Clyde airports news if you have some. Send any Scottish Aircraft and airport images to us and we will put them on site for you.

06.09.07: Well we've done it again thanks to all you surfers, 20,000 plus hits last month a new record. Once again thankyou for all your interest, comments images and support.

Well, ATC History Update once more added in Greenock section.

The lines for Empire class C Flying Boat are now nearing completion as are the offset sheets. It seems the Shipyard in Newcastle NSW are interested in building all the frames full size to eventually construct a full size replica. We wish them well in this enormous project. Saw the Cessna Seaplane over Greenock last week, any one else in Clydeside seen it yet, if so send us images and comments all you 'spotters'. We will certainly publish decent material.

20.08.07: Congratulations to Loch Lomond Seaplanes for commencement today of a service from the Clyde at Glasgow to Oban in the Western highlands, the TV news said this morning that the service would take 25 mins and carries 9 passengers at a time.

May this be one of many flights opening up the beauties of Scotland in such a graceful way.Once again congratulations David and your team!!

16.08.07: Have had problems accessing site forgive delay, now up and running again.

Picture at Dumbarton turned out to be a Sunderland the one shown in my Dumbarton Site and shows the a/c flying from l to r across Dumbarton castle and very low probably landing after a trial, note new a/c no RAF codes showing at this time. This a/c could well be the last sunderland built at Dumbarton and came with the other pics shown and found in Dumbarton Library.

ATC History will be added tomorrow.

02.08.07: Again ATC History Sept 13th 1977.

Did visit hairdressers at Dumbarton and had an amusing time but no picture yet.

Andrew tells me that the old Blackburn Aircraft site at Dumbarton is to be pulled down and houses are to go there. Andrew also says he knows of someone who is building a Catalina. What scale I didnt ask. However Andrew if you are reading this news would you please send me your telephone number and perhaps I can get some more info on the picture and the model. I did enjoy my short visit.

26.07.07: Latest ATC History added for Greenock.

Picture of Flying Boat described last week should be in images, or Dumbarton section by next week.

I will follow up mention of a/c described below and let you have details ASAP.

Any images of aircraft in this neck of the woods, be it, civil or military, old or new would ber very welcome.

Empire Class C latest lines are coming on slow but sure. These may be avilable on the waitrose link once they are finalised.

20.070.07: Latest on ATC as usual back to one a week.

Will be visiting a shop in Dumbarton shortly to view, hopefully, pic of flying boat passing Dumbarton Castle.

Stuart has asked me to follow up and identify. Also tip off that James Watt College Greenock have a Bulldog a/c they are working on at Kingston Dock Industrial Estate.

I believe the College have an Aeronautical Dept.

Due to deliver a pic of flying boat, single engined, USA origin, has single central float as well as usual side floats. A/c is a Kingfisher and museum at Largs say this was seen at Largs during war. Any confirmations?

10.07.07: Well, back from break at Belfast, where I was able to view a new museum at Long Kesh to be opened in the future. The two hangars they use are T2's increased in height to build Short Stirling bombers during the war.

25.050.07: ATC Greenock history 'Saturday Special' Nov 1981 see usual spot.

In passing' an interesting bit of info from our Lancashire contact Robin Bird, you remember his father was an Official Photographer at AMEE Helensborough during the last war.

Robin states that ' I CONTINUE TO RESEARCH MY FATHER'S CAREER WITH MAEE Helensburgh and
discovered that; MAEE and 618 sqd Highball tests on Loch Striven used as
a target ship, l'adiral courbet, the former French battleship.

I looked this vessel up in my 'Ships' directory and reckon this was a French battleship of 1st WW origin circa 1910. Anyone know? Named Courbet.

17.05.07: We have got to Greenock ATC History clips 1982 see usual spot!

News. Work is going ahead on lines for the building of a replica Empire C Class Flying Boat. Shorts designed these pre war, and two were named with Scottish connections, 'Caledonia' and 'Clyde'. The boats flew the long routes round the globe many of which where 3000 mile hops. Caledonia flew the Atlantic, indeed was the largest of this type to do so and the first. Look to link mbcass etc in our Links Section for outstanding details of this class of flying boat.

One such flying boat 'Hythe' was used during the war to assist with Coastal Command and was at Greenock Cairds Yard, then Scottish Aviation. The slips are still visible near the Waterside Cinema at the edge of the Clyde. Anyone with details of these craft or indeed its development to the Sunderland, please contact us.

09.05.07: Picture of Victor bomber at Bury St Edmunds now in images double click as usual for larger image. If you want a pic twice size of largest just contact me.

Frank has produced articles and pics of Crash sites in this area so they are due to be published shortly. See Crash Sites and Images.

I  have been in touch with GFC and they are not responding.Well as the saying goes " You can take a horse to water but you cant make it drink". They arent the first notable Aviation Company that fail to help us, but not to worry, plenty more will who catch this interest in their local aviation activities. After all this is not a money making site just a hobby.

A grp constructed seaplane is being planned in the USA by a company associated with MAF. I have asked for details so keep an eye out. What about some of these operating around the Rivers and Lochs of Scotland?

24.10.06: Thankyou. Last month we had 11000 hits a record, I'm not sure how we doubled the previous max.

I advise a visit to this most interesting site.Let me thank you now Paul for all your help and direction.

01.10.06:

Needed:- Please any information on marine craft used at RAF Greenock, Battery Park, during WW2.We know of one boat RAF Seaplane Tender that was there RAF No 377.It was apparently kept there for some time engaged on personnel transport. The main marine storage unit was transferred to Dumbarton becoming 62MU. Anyone know or experienced this particular vessel please contact us.

20.09.06: Second series of pics WW2 Western Desert all of German aircraft.(See Images). An interesting note in passing is that a Seaplane Company once operated from Cumbernauld airfield, this lies between Glasgow and Edinburgh airports, anyone know of seaplane activity in this area? women, that we might live in peace.Look in 'Images' next month.

10.08.06: Well pics of a model of an RAF Seaplane Tender will be added shortly to images. Take a look and tell me if you think the number is wrong, ie is 305 a Search and Rescue Unit number used with their 'Whalebacks'. A faster and larger vessel having quite similar construction methods. Have a look at the pics of a real Seaplane Tender being restored, and shown in the Dumbarton Site.

Please note that this website has been running just over a year. Last month we have had 6000 hits and overall 50,000. Not bad for our first year. May I take this opportunity to thank all who have helped.

The ASR pics of a 'Whaleback I made are still being searched for amongst my memorabilia. It's amazing how one can get diverted by discovering long lost photos.

I did see some pics of a 'Whaleback' in the Basin at Bowling, and another identical boat in the river at Kirkintilloch.Greenock and Dumbarton had Maintenance Units for seaplane tenders.I wonder if they worked on these bigger boys? The ASR whalebacks had three engines.I believe they were Merlin marinised motors. I will certainly put the images up as soon as I find mine. Please dont be afraid to offer your images and anecdotes.

Look in the book references for 'The Hebrides at War' by Mike Hughes, he shows pics of these too.

26.05.06: The Succoth Argyle crash site. An interesting website www.lochgoilhistory.co.uk/chapter 6.pdf.page 9-11 details 'The Mystery Surrounding the Plane Crash 1949' The a/c was a USAAF B29 flying from Scampton and had come from Berlin.(See images in Crash Site page)

11.05.06: At last contact has been made with some diver friends at Port Glasgows Divers Store, they have our website address now, so hopefully they may be interested in a dive to find aircraft parts in the vicinity of Battery Park.I will keep you informed of any progress, but I am enthusiastic that we may find some parts of DV 578, a Sunderland that 'turned turtle' and sank there in storm conditions during the war.

29.04.06:Pic of COORONG has been found on the internet.Divers have been difficult to locate at their shop in Port Glasgow and via telephone.

15.04.06:For further new link and details see 'Links'.New addition to Books to be made shortly. Will be meeting divers next week to attempt dive on Sunderland sunk locally.

09.04.06: On holiday recently I came across a book entitled 'Flying Boats' by an author whose surname is London, in it is a picture of the Blackburn B20 built at Blackburn Aircraft Dumbarton, it stands outside the main hangar and for its background is the 'Dumbarton Rock.'This is the first picture of a flying boat that is actually out of the water at Dumbarton.Incidently the book is in print for those of you who are interested, it covers a wide range of all types built.

I am hoping to get some divers to look at the remains of a Sunderland boat that sunk locally. If we find anything more we will let you know.(This is me following up the finding of the propeller, see below.)

15.03.06; I have recently received a paper cutting from the Greenock Telegraph dated 21.11.1980 which tells of a propeller being discovered on the river bed just off Battery Park, where the Greenock Flying Boat Maintenance Base existed in WW2.This is a unit from the Sunderland flying boat that sank in bad weather during the war.The confirmation has come from a friend of mine who was a flight engineer at the time, based in Greenock.

I have the full accident details for this aircraft, and will post this paper cutting showing the prop unit in'crash sites' shortly.

08.03.06: Rod sends war memoirs from Largs see Aviation Sites.
